Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was honored last week with the citation of Commander of the British Empire (CBE). The honor, one step below knighthood, was bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II. Gilmour was cited for his charity work. He recently donated nearly $6 million to the homeless organization Crisis. He was in the news in January 2002 when he donated nearly $6.5 million to the same organization. A number of people from the entertainment world received citations along with Gilmour, including Sting, CBE; Gerry Marsden (Gerry and the Pacemakers), MBE; Gary Brooker (Procol Harum), MBE; Errol Brown (Hot Chocolate), MBE; and actor Roger Moore, who was knighted for his work with UNICEF and the Kiwanis International children's charity. While the honors are given by the Queen, they are most often selected by members of the British government, sometimes after public nominations. In descending order, the Queen's honors are knighthoods, Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) and Officer of the British Empire (OBE).
