"Dark Side" nominated for SACD award
Pink Floyd 1973 classic short-listed by High Fidelity Review

High Fidelity Review has nominated Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" SACD for the Web site's 2003 Surround Music People's Choice Award.

Visitors to the site can vote for their favorite high-resolution release. The winner will be honored at the Surround Music Awards dinner in December.

The "Dark Side" hybrid SACD was released in March to coincide with the album's 30th anniversary. Industry pundits predicted it had the legs to become one of the best-selling high-resolution titles, considering the popularity and longevity of the original release, which spent more than 700 weeks on the Billboard chart.

Twelve contributors to High Fidelity Review created the list of six nominees by selecting their favorite DVD-A and SACD titles released after Dec. 14, 2002. The results were collated to produce the final list of nominees:

"Avalon"/Roxy Music
"Dark Side of the Moon"/Pink Floyd
"Document No. 5"/R.E.M.
"Everything Must Go"/Steely Dan
"Sea Change"/Beck
"Up"/Peter Gabriel

"It is important to recognise the work of all those pushing the boundaries of high-resolution playback and multi-channel music, whether they release on DVD-Audio, SACD or both," said High Fidelity Review publisher/editor Stuart M. Robinson.

Releases that were nearly nominated include: "Chicago II"/Chicago, "Bach: St. Matthaus Passion"/Arnold Schoenberg Choir, Concertus Musicus Wien (Harnoncourt), "Grace"/Broadway Inspirational Voices, and "Love and Lament"/Netherlands Bach Society (van Veldhoven).

Sony and Phillips Electronics developed the SACD format in September 1999. Like DVD-A, SACD offers increased audio fidelity, and can provide six-track multichannel audio, as well as text and images. Hyrbid SACDs are playable in standard CD players as well as SACD-enabled devices.

The winner of the people's choice award will be honored at the 5th Annual International Surround Conference & Showcase, Dec. 11-12, 2003, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, Calif.

High Fidelity Review is a publication of U.K.-based SMR Group. The site, founded by Robinson, went online Dec. 28, 2001, and provides news and reviews of high-resolution digital audio releases.
