Floyd's 1979 album/1982 film to be adapted to stage
Pink
Floyd co-founder Roger Waters
will write the book and arrange the music for a new stage adaptation
of Floyd's 1979 album "The
Wall."
According
to The Hollywood Reporter, Waters has sold production rights to
Miramax Films and Thomas Mottola,
former head of Sony Music and founder of Mottola Co. Miramax co-chairman
Harvey Weinstein, producer of Broadway's "The
Producers," "Gypsy" and others, is also involved
in the project.
"I am
thrilled to be involved with bringing 'The Wall' to Broadway and
to give new generations the opportunity to see this legendary show,"
Weinstein told The Hollywood Reporter. "I am also delighted
to be working with music geniuses Tommy Mottola and Roger Waters."
A feature
film of "The Wall,"
directed by Alan Parker ("The Commitments,"
"Evita," "Angela's Ashes"), was released in
1982.
In addition
to Floyd's own performance of the piece during their 1980/81 tour,
there have been previous adaptations: An
autumn 2003 production in Wisconsin starred Gary Cherone,
former vocalist for Extreme and Van Halen.
This new adaptation
will be the first time "The Wall" has appeared on Broadway.
"Now
I can write in some laughs, notable by their absence in the movie,"
said Waters.
