Roger Waters releases “We Shall Overcome” video

Posted June 7, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has made available a new recording of the protest song “We Shall Overcome.”

Posted June 3 to YouTube, the video is a call for the end of the blockade of Gaza.

Waters is seen in the video singing and playing acoustic guitar. Lead guitar is played by G.E. Smith, with drums by Thor Jonsson, neither of whom are seen in the video.

Waters explains his motivation by referencing the freedom march to Gaza this winter. “The would be Freedom Marchers wanted to peacefully draw attention to the predicament of the Palestinian population of Gaza. The Egyptian government, (funded to the tune of $2.1 billion a year, by us, the U.S. tax payers), would not allow the marchers to approach Gaza,” he writes.

“I was moved, in the circumstances, to record a new version of ‘We Shall Overcome.’ It seems appropriate.”

As long as Hamas backed by Iran rules Palistine Israel will be forced to protect itself but if the Arabs and their terrorist cohorts lay down their arms there will be no more war in the middle-east and “The Wall” will come down. If the Israeli’s lay down their arms and tear down “The Wall” they will be wiped out in a second holocaust and Israel will disappear from the map. I don’t believe this is what you want and I am surprised that you would act so naive. I hate to say it but I’m on the other side of the wall on this one Roger. See you in Chicago and Cleveland! Floor tickets!

    Lee,

As usual you (and your ilk) confuse the chicken and the egg. I urge you to pick up a book and read up on your history. A lie perpetuated a million times over is still a lie. The Israelis will never convince a truly educated person that this war or this wall is about security. Please stop playing the Iran card, the anti-semite card, or the Hamas card. Frankly i’m tired of all. Israel clearly seeks out any possible excuse to continue to oppress and occupy the people of Palestine. I do believe that time will make things right. Your children’s children will not look back on you kindly. Enjoy Roger Waters in Chicago and Cleveland – but remember, truth is absolute. Maybe one day God will remove the blind fold from your eyes.. or better yet, you will flip the channel to something other than Fox News 😉

“they will be wiped out in a second holocaust and Israel will disappear from the map” You mean the way that Israel’s been making Palestine disappear off the map for the last 6 decades or so?

I’m a huge pink floyd fan with all of my heart, but i strongly disagree with Roger on this one. The wall sperating Gaza and Israel was put up in 2006 after years of violence. Israel decided to put up the wall after 2005 when there were a total of 56 successful suicide bombings in the whole year. That is roughly around one suicide bombing a week. In 2008 Israel waged war with Hamas after they stood by for months of over 6,000 rockets fired from Gaza into towns such as Sderot. As oppressive as the wall is, Israel had to protect their citizens. Peace was offered by Israel in the Oslo Accords and the Camp David Accords. If I recall correctly it was the Palestinians who turned it down.

Gracias.
