Clarification: Floyd reunion a near miss

Posted November 29, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Last week we reported (“Floyd reunion a near miss”) the world very nearly saw a reunion of the surviving members of Pink Floyd, but when the venue turned out to be the home of a wealthy socialite, drummer Nick Mason pulled out.

What we didn’t make clear — or understand ourselves! — was the reunion in question was this past July’s Hoping Foundation charity event when Roger Waters and David Gilmour shared a stage.

The pair got Andy Newmark (“The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking,” “The Final Cut”) to sit in for Mason.

“Wall”-related film underway

Posted November 28, 2010 by Floydian Slip

The Islington Green Schoolchildren who sang on the Pink Floyd hit “Another Brick in the Wall” and their teacher are to be the subjects of a new feature film.

Producer Andy Harries (pictured) (“The Queen,” “The Damned United”) is said to be working with writer Steve Thompson on the project for Left Bank and BBC Films.

The movie will tell the true story of Alan Renshaw who worked as a music teacher at the north London public school. When, under his tutelage, the kids provide the chorus for that somewhat rebellious Floyd hit — now that we think of it, the only lyrics in that song are the chorus! — Renshaw loses his job. (He had transported the kids to the band’s Britannia Row studios for the session without permission of head teacher Margaret Maden.)

One sticking point: Though the producer has secured the rights to Renshaw’s story, he hasn’t obtained the green light to use the song. With the children’s participation somewhat contentious — in 2004 a group of the now-grown kids with assistance from music royalties expert Peter Rowan sued claiming they hadn’t been properly compensated 30 years ago — that could be quite a stumbling block.

Our fingers are crossed for what could be a very interesting Floyd-related film.

Peter Christopherson, one third of prolific album cover design team Hipgnosis, has died. He was 55.

Christopherson worked on covers for Floyd’s “A Nice Pair” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975), and “Animals” (1977).

In addition to his design work, Christopherson was a musician, and a member of bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV.

Pink Floyd reunion a near miss

Posted November 26, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason revealed that a planned Floyd reunion show was called off when the venue was found to not suit the band’s tastes.

Mason told The Independent the band backed out of a charity gig when it learned the event would be held at the home of socialite Jemima Khan.

“That particular event wasn’t right for a reformation of Pink Floyd,” he said. “I said I would do it, but it was a charity event for suits, and it felt wrong to turn a small thing into a big deal just because Jemima Khan was in attendance.

“Why play for a lot of posh totty instead of some of the other things we should save that up for — a Live 8 type of thing,” he added, referring to the group’s 2005 reunion, its last with keyboardist Rick Wright, who died three years later.
