Pink Floyd tribute band lawsuit

Posted May 24, 2011 by Floydian Slip

If we told you members of a Pink Floyd cover band allegedly liked to unwind after gigs by smoking pot back at the hotel room, would you be surprised? What if we told you another band member had brought suit against them for doing the very same?

Singer Graham Heath, who has worked with San Diego-area tributes Pink Froyd and Pink Floyd Experience, is suing band-mate and guitarist Tom Quinn and band reps Annerin Productions and Jeff Parry Promotions on seven counts.

Legalize aside, Heath’s major beef is that his complaint about fellow band-mate’s proclivity to the herb resulted in his unlawful termination.

The suit runs deeper than that, with phrases like “breach of contract,” “defamation of character,” and “false light” popping up. But that first one is enough to harsh the mellow of any self-respecting axeman.

Read more at the San Diego Reader.

Let’s hope the guys can patch things up and make good at some charity event reunion 20 years down the road.

Poll results: Best Floyd album cover

Posted May 23, 2011 by Floydian Slip

The results are in. And the best Pink Floyd album cover, as voted by you, is … “Wish You Were Here.” The band’s 1975 album beat “Dark Side of the Moon” by a single vote.

Though we didn’t cast a ballot ourselves, we here at “Floydian Slip” agree: The art for “Wish You Were Here” perhaps best captures the spirit of the music contained within, and jibes perfectly with the band’s enigmatic vibe. For our money, “Animals” should have been the runner-up.

The biggest surprise on the list, in our humble opinion? “Meddle,” which came in 6th place. It’s one of our least favorite covers. But, then again, there’s no accounting for taste. (For those of you confused as to what the image on “Meddle” actually is: It’s an ear superimposed on ripples in water.)

Thanks to everyone who voted. The complete results are below.

Sound+Vision winners

We promised to draw at random to select three voters to receive 1-year subscriptions to Sound+Vision magazine. Our winners are:

  1. Chris Devaney, North Reading, MA
  2. Raymond Garcia, Glendale, CA
  3. Rich Greenbaum, West Sacramento, CA

Floyd-funded school to close

Posted May 22, 2011 by Floydian Slip

A school for at-risk teens founded by Pink Floyd in the early 1970s is about to close, after losing funding from its local council.

London’s Schoolhouse Education was started with help from the band, which raised £1,000 for it at a 1972 Oxfam gig at Wembley Empire Pool.

The school’s Lewisham site will close due to declining enrollment and budget cuts. Its Greenwich facility will remain open.

Headteacher Lynda Smith told the News of the World the school “would not exist if it wasn’t for Pink Floyd.”

Our latest “Floydian Slip” affiliate station is moving the show to a new day and time.

KRHV 93.3 FM “Sierra’s Best Rock” in Mammoth Lakes, CA, is moving the show from Thursday afternoons to Fridays at 11 p.m. (PT).

Program Director Lisa Meuret says the show is a little too “heady” for the afternoon slot. (You got that right, sister! ;))

We’ll be following KRHV’s “Friday Night Freeform” show with Bill Snyder from now on. Sounds like the place to be …
