string quartet tribute released
Latest in series pays homage to "Dark
Side of the Moon"
Vitamin
Records released "The String Quartet Tribute to Pink
Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon'" on April 29.
The album
is a complete re-recording of Floyd's seminal 1973 album. It's one
of many in a series of string, electronic and bluegrass tributes
to various bands released by the Los Angeles, Calif.-based label.
In September
2002, Vitamin released
"Welcome to the Machine: The Electronic Tribute to Pink Floyd,"
a repackaging of its previous two electronic tributes to the band.
In 2001, the company released
"Pickin' on Pink Floyd," a bluegrass tribute.
Eric
Gorfain, leader of The Section String Quartet,
describes the recording of "Dark Side" to "Floydian
Slip" as "reverent and faithful, yet experimental and
improvisational all at the same time.
"We performed
'Money' and 'Us and Them' last night in L.A. and both were received
very well by the audience," he reports. "Eventually, we
plan to perform the entire 'Dark Side of the Moon' album live."
The group
has appeared on more than 20 albums, including string tributes to
Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Tool,
U2 and Bjork. Members of the quartet
have toured or recorded with Jimmy Page and Robert
Plant, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart,
Elton John and many others.
