Sony Music will release a greatly-expanded edition of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” for the album’s 50th anniversary. It will include a number of previously unreleased alternate versions and live recordings.
The album drops Dec. 12 and will be available on 3LP, 2CD, Blu-ray, digital and as a boxset.
Long-time Floyd collaborator James Guthrie has remixed the original 1975 album in Dolby Atmos.
The package also includes 25 bonus tracks made up of nine studio rarities; and 16 live recordings made by bootlegger Mike Millard at Los Angeles Sports Arena on April 26, 1975. This marks those bootleg recordings’ first official release. The live audio has been restored and remastered by Steven Wilson.
Among the previously-unreleased tracks is an early version of “Welcome to the Machine,” titled “The Machine Song (Demo #2, Revisited).” Roger Waters‘s original home recording demo of the track is also part of the package.
Other rarities include a previously-unheard instrumental version of “Wish You Were Here” with David Gilmour playing pedal steel guitar; and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-9)” joining together for the first time the two halves of the song, newly re-mixed by Guthrie.
Floyd teased the announcement of this 50th anniversary release by updating its website, social media platforms and streaming presence to all appear to be wrapped in opaque black vinyl — a nod to the original LP’s release.
The official online store of the band — shop.pinkfloyd.com — has added a number of items to its inventory to complement the album’s re-release, including a windproof lighter and fire extinguisher. Both refer to the album’s infamous cover photo of stunt man Ronnie Rondell Jr. ablaze while shaking hands with his doppelgänger. (Rondell died last month at age 88.
