Sony/Legacy will release a 50th anniversary edition of Pink Floyd‘s “Animals” album on Jan. 22.
Available in a number of formats, “Animals 50” will include previously-unreleased tracks, unseen photos and more.
The “Deluxe Boxset” edition — the priciest at $234.98 — features the original 1977 album, James Guthrie‘s 2018 remix, a collection of rarities and a previously-unreleased Oakland Coliseum recording from May 9, 1977.
Variety reports the live set includes “Animals” and “Wish You Were Here” in their entirety, two “Dark Side of the Moon” tracks, and the last-ever live performance of “Careful With That Axe, Eugene.”
The live recording was originally made by bootlegger Reinhard Hohlwein, who was 19 at the time. (Last year’s 50th anniversary reissue of “Wish You Were Here” also included a live set originally recorded by a bootlegger.)
The boxset includes three LPs with original album, 2018 remix and rarities; five CDs with original album, 2018 remix, rarities, and the Oakland concert; and a Blu-ray featuring all of the audio, with the 2018 remix in 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos.
Rarities include previously-unreleased early drafts of “Dogs” and “Sheep”; a ’77 radio edit of the later, previously only available as a promo release to broadcasters; a “Studio Jam”; and a lost track by Roger Waters titled “Young Nicholas Jon.”
The deluxe set also includes a 64-page hardcover book featuring new sleeve notes by novelist Jonathan Lethem; an interview with bootlegger Hohlwein; an excerpt from Aubrey “Po” Powell’s memoir about making the album’s iconic artwork; and previously-unpublished photos of the album, artwork and tour.
It also includes a stencil — presumably for taking to the streets accompanied with cans of pink spray paint — and three posters.
Other formats available Jan. 22 will be an LP ($29.98), double-LP ($42.98), 2 CD set ($19.98), Blu-ray ($29.98), and, believe it or not, cassette ($19.98).
Baaa. Oink. Whoof.
