Floydian filmmaker seeks funding

Posted June 10, 2010 by Floydian Slip

A new feature-length documentary film about long-time Pink Floyd sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson is nearly complete, and the filmmaker is looking for funding.

New York filmmaker Roddy Bogawa is the man behind “Taken by Storm,” a 90-minute film looking at the prolific career of Thorgerson, who helped create nearly every Floyd album cover, as well as countless iconic covers from some of the world’s biggest bands.

Floyd’s David Gilmour and Nick Mason are two of many musicians who appear in the film, along with photographers, illustrators and assistants who’ve helped execute the work from the days of Thorgerson’s early studio Hipgnosis to his new company, StormStudios.

Thorgerson has granted Bogawa access to his personal archives so the film promises a bevy of never-before-seen workparts.

Bogawa has established a page at Kickstarter to raise money to complete his project. Pledge amounts as low as $25 can get you some swag in return. If you have larger amounts to spend, some of the rewards are quite impressive. (Ever fancied yourself an Associate Producer? With $3,500, consider it done.)

Visit “Taken by Storm” at Kickstarter or visit the film’s official site.

Roger Waters releases “We Shall Overcome” video

Posted June 7, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has made available a new recording of the protest song “We Shall Overcome.”

Posted June 3 to YouTube, the video is a call for the end of the blockade of Gaza.

Waters is seen in the video singing and playing acoustic guitar. Lead guitar is played by G.E. Smith, with drums by Thor Jonsson, neither of whom are seen in the video.

Waters explains his motivation by referencing the freedom march to Gaza this winter. “The would be Freedom Marchers wanted to peacefully draw attention to the predicament of the Palestinian population of Gaza. The Egyptian government, (funded to the tune of $2.1 billion a year, by us, the U.S. tax payers), would not allow the marchers to approach Gaza,” he writes.

“I was moved, in the circumstances, to record a new version of ‘We Shall Overcome.’ It seems appropriate.”

Rare Syd Barrett recording up for auction

Posted June 1, 2010 by Floydian Slip

One of the last-known live recordings of Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett is going on the auction block later this month. The sale could lead to a commercial release of the material.

The reel of ½-inch tape contains a concert performed Jan. 27, 1972, at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, England. The show included Barrett sitting-in for three numbers with the Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band: “Number Nine,” “Gotta Be a Reason,” “Let’s Roll,” and “Sweet Little Angel.”

The recording, which might be the master recording, also includes performances by Hawkwind and Pink Fairies.

The show was recorded by Spaceward Studios founder Gary Lucas, who’s provided a statement of provenance for the item. Lucas says, “The recording of the concert was organized at the last minute and the equipment was poor as all that was available was a rather poor mixer. So we just stuck a stereo mic pair across the stage for drums/backline and mixed in some PA mix for front.

“The whole affair was a shambles with a fight breaking out around the stage at one point destroying at least one of the mics.”

Nonetheless, auction house Bonhams describes the audio quality of the tape as “reasonable” and says “preliminary inquiries as to the possibility of the recording being released have been made.”

The auction will be held June 23. The recording is expected to fetch upwards of $5,000.

Pre-register for the auction at the Bonhams site.

Syd Barrett book in development

Posted March 30, 2010 by Floydian Slip

U.K. publisher Essential Works is planning to publish a high-end, hardcover book devoted to Syd Barrett.

“Barrett,” to be published as a small run and sold primarily via the Web, will focus on the “creative life” of the once-Floyd frontman. It’ll include more than 100 images, more than half of which have never before been published.

The company has set up a registration area at its Web site to gauge interest in the project. “We need people to register so that we know there’s enough interest out there,” according to Essential Works’ Russell Beecher. The volume of registrations will determine whether the project moves forward.

If it does, publication is expected in the fall for a price of about £60, plus delivery. A percentage of all sales will go to the Syd Barrett Estate, which has authorized the book.

Three-song Pink Floyd cover EP coming in April

Posted March 13, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Fruits de Mer Records will release “What Colour is Pink?” on April 19.

The EP will include three Floyd songs from “A Saucerful of Secrets” — “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” “Let There Be More Light”, and “A Saucerful of Secrets” — re-recorded by German prog/psych band Vibravoid.

Available as a limited edition of 500, the EP will be sold as a pink vinyl 7-inch record with pink label and pink sleeve. Already 200 of the EPs have been pre-ordered.

This will be the 10th release from the Surrey-based label, which boasts it “loses money on every release and we love it.” The company, in business for less than two years, has previously released re-recordings of songs originally by Small Faces, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Nick Drake, Caravan, Kraftwerk, Van der Graaf Generator, Nico and others.

Fruit de Mer’s eighth EP included a cover of Floyd’s “Julia Dream” by Swedish duo Us and Them.

You’ll be able to buy the EP at the label’s Web site. For more information, email them.
