Nick Mason speaks out against file sharing penalty

Posted September 10, 2009 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason (left) is one of many professional musicians lending a voice to the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), a group encouraging the British government to rethink its stance toward illegal file sharers.

“The last thing we want to be doing is going to war with our fanbase. File sharing means a new generation of fans for us,” Mason said.

“It’s a great thing to have another generation discovering your music and thinking you’re rather good. File sharing plays a part in that, because that generation don’t do it any other way.”

His comments are a reaction to British Business Secretary Lord Mandelson‘s plan to suspend the Internet accounts of those caught sharing digital music files.

FAC has drafted a resolution that calls on the government to innovate new business models that help fans obtain music legally.

That plan has received backing by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and the Music Producers’ Guild.

Battersea redevelopment in doubt

Hopes to redevelop the Battersea Power Station, the ominous four-chimney structure pictured on the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1977 “Animals” album, are in doubt, as the company planning to do the work drowns in debt.

Real Estate Opportunities plans to make the nearly-80-year-old structure the centerpiece of a £4 billion riverside development to include 3,500 homes, shopping malls, hotel and environmentally-friendly office space.

But those plans are sketchy now the company is £1.62 billion debt.

Read more about the history of the power station at the London Evening Standard.

Computer worm disguised as Pink Floyd video

Posted August 25, 2009 by Floydian Slip

A computer “worm” disguised as a Pink Floyd music video is tunneling its way through Chinese social networking site Renren.

The Pinkren-A worm tricks users into helping it propagate by making itself appear to be a video for Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” When users click on it, the worm executes programming that helps it spread across the network.

Renren is a popular Chinese social networking site akin to Facebook. It has 40 million users.

Apparently the worm has no malicious payload except to continue spreading.

“Piper” named Top 10 album from “Summer of Love”

Posted July 1, 2007 by Floydian Slip

MSN Music Editor Sean Nelson has named Pink Floyd‘s debut album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” one of the best albums of 1967.

As media attention focuses on the 40th anniversary of the “Summer of Love,” MSN’s article “Summer of Love’s Greatest Hits” singles out 10 albums as the year’s best.

“Piper” comes in at #9.

“‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ is the only existing record of (Syd) Barrett firing on all cylinders before aggressive LSD intake and looming mental illness combined to render him first unreliable, and then basically vacant,” Nelson writes. “It’s also the most ’60s-sounding record of the ’60s that also sounds good.”

EMI Records plans a three-CD remaster of “Piper” in August.
