Pink Floyd exhibit to open in 2017

Nick Mason announcing Their Mortal Remains outside the Victoria & Albert Museum, London

“Their Mortal Remains,” a long-delayed exhibition devoted to Pink Floyd, will finally open in London next year.

Containing more than 350 items, promoters describe the show as an “immersive, multi-sensory and theatrical journey” through the 50-year history of the band.

Running May 13 to Oct. 1, 2017, at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the show coincides with the 50th anniversary of Floyd’s debut 45 “Arnold Layne,” released in March 1967.

Drummer Nick Mason joined a flying pig outside the venue to announce the event today.

Admission ranges from £11 to £57. Tickets can be purchased online.

The exhibition was originally to open in Milan in September 2014. But Evolve Devolve, the Italian promoter of the event, issued a statement a month before launch saying the complexity of the installation made it impossible for the company to meet the timeline.

The London event, promoted by Michael Cohl and Iconic Entertainment Studios, has the involvement of all surviving members of the Floyd.

Learn more about the event at the V&A site.

Pink Floyd honored at former Regent Street Polytechnic

Posted May 29, 2015 by Floydian Slip

Yesterday, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Nick Mason helped unveil a plaque honoring the band at the site of the former Regent Street Polytechnic in London.

Waters, Mason and Rick Wright studied architecture at the institution, now the University of Westminster, from 1962-65, when they formed the band with Syd Barrett.

Juliette Gale, first wife of Wright and also a former student of the school, also attended the event.

The plaque is the second to be installed as part of the Regent Street Heritage Plaque Program. The first was placed in 2012 on Heddon Street, the location of the cover art for David Bowie‘s 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.”

Nick Mason to host charity event at his home

Posted April 17, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and his wife, Annette, will host a charity auction at their Corsham, Wiltshire, home June 21 and 22.

The event will benefit Springboard Opportunity Group in Chippenham and the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust.

“We wanted to support two different charities who impact on the lives of folk locally,” Nick says. “We thought about one for the elderly and one for the young.”

He’ll bake a cake to be auctioned.

“Nick is an excellent cook and often creates wonderful diner parties for our friends,” Annette says. “When his daughters and sons are home, he still makes a special biscuit with a secret recipe which I know includes Mars Bars.”

The couple’s home was once owned by the Duchess of Cornwall (pictured with the Masons at last year’s event).

Nick Mason discovers lost Floyd film

Posted January 27, 2014 by Floydian Slip

The Daily Mirror reports Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has unearthed never-before-seen film of the band.

He discovered the black and white footage while researching archival material to be used for exhibitions about the band.

It shows band members Mason, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Syd Barrett backstage at some early gigs in the late-’60s

“There are some unseen bits and pieces,” Mason explains. “We have got a bit of backstage black and white footage — 8mm film — that we took ourselves.”

No word on when or how the footage might be made public.

Signed Pink Floyd artwork to benefit charity

Posted January 9, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has signed 10 limited edition prints, which are being sold to benefit charity.

Digital Artist Tim Wakefield uses soundwaves as templates to create some pretty far out artwork. His Pink Floyd piece is title “Careful with That Axe, Eugene,” inspired by the 1968 song of the same name. The number was originally released as the B-side to the “Point Me at the Sky” single, and later appeared on the 1971 “Relics” compilation.

Ten prints of his Floyd piece, signed by Mason, along with works inspired by Alice Cooper, Kate Bush, Queen, Eric Clapton and many others are being sold at the Indiegogo site.

Sales of the prints benefit the War Child’s Children of Syria Appeal, which will create safe havens in Syrian refugee camps to help protect children affected by the conflict.

The Floyd piece is 40″ x 40″ and goes for $1,000.

Nick Mason releases drum sample library

Posted November 15, 2013 by Floydian Slip

Want to play drums like Nick Mason? Sorry, we can’t help you.

But a new sample library from the Pink Floyd drummer can at least help you sound like him.

Mason’s created a sample library of his custom Ludwig “Black Kit” that promises to deliver a virtual recreation of the kit to be played with any MIDI keyboard or e-drum setup.

The sample library comes in FXPansion’s BFD2 format and includes mic channels that can be mixed for what’s being described by publisher Sonic Reality as “full album quality, vintage ’70s drums.”

The recording sessions for the samples were produced by Alan Parsons (“The Dark Side of the Moon”) using the same EMI mixing console Floyd did in the ’70s.

You can buy Nick Mason Drums online for $69/£43.

Dark Side-inspired radio play to premiere Aug. 26

Posted August 7, 2013 by Floydian Slip

“Darkside,” a radio drama by noted playwright Tom Stoppard (center) inspired by Pink Floyd’s 1973 “The Dark Side of the Moon,” will premiere on BBC Radio 2 on Monday, Aug. 26 at 10 p.m.

The production, commissioned by the BBC, was recently previewed for an invite-only audience of dignitaries, including Floyd drummer Nick Mason, at a BBC “happening.” Attendees donned headphones and were treated to a simultaneous light show.

“I love it,” Mason told The Independent. “But I’m tempted to text Tom and tell him it’s really great — but there was a lot of actors talking over the music.”

Stoppard’s first major success was “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” in 1966. He also wrote “Shakespeare in Love,” “Arcadia” and “The Real Thing.” His play “Rock ‘n Roll” drew inspiration from the life of Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett.

Read details about “Darkside” at The Independent website.
