Early Floyd member sells his guitars

Posted December 5, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Chris Dennis, who spent six months in 1963 as a member of the band that would evolve into Pink Floyd, recently auctioned off three of his guitars.

Now 74 and living in Llangefni, Anglesey, North Wales, Dennis left the group to join the Royal Air Force stationed in Bahrain, because he felt the band wasn’t going anywhere. When he returned, the band had released its first album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1967) and Dennis wasn’t invited back into the fold.

Dennis had collected approximately 20 guitars since his Pink Floyd days, opening his own recording studio in Cambridge and doing work with Dave Berry, Tony Leonard (The Glitter Band) and members of Shakin Stevens.

He recently auctioned off a Sunburst Stratocaster and Fender Squire Stagemaster for almost £500. A Gretch Eddie Cochrane worth £600 didn’t meet his reserve price.

Mail Online has posted an interesting story about Dennis and his remarkably well-adjusted attitude in the wake of just nearly being part of a band that went on to world domination.

Nick Mason receives honorary degree

Posted November 27, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from London’s University of Westminster for his contributions to the music industry over the last 50 years.

Westminster was known as Regent Street Polytechnic when Mason enrolled as an architecture student in the 1960s. He met Roger Waters and Rick Wright at the school, and eventually dropped out as the band’s star continued to rise.

“Studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic introduced me to some of the key people and biggest collaborators in my career, many of whom I have been lucky enough to work with over the last 40 years,” Mason says.

“Three of Pink Floyd met there so in essence we were formed under the roof of the Polytechnic; we rehearsed in the common room in the basement and made some of our first performances there.

“Not only did studying architecture teach us some useful stuff, but it also gave us an opportunity to develop and put us in touch with some fantastic mentors and industry contacts that have helped us along the way.”

Roger Waters to appear in theatrical production

Posted November 21, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Roger Waters will take the stage next week playing a different kind of role than usual. The Pink Floyd co-founder will join the cast of Culture Project‘s revival of “The Exonerated,” a play about wrongfully convicted survivors of death row.

Featuring a rotating cast of celebrities reading accounts by former death row inmates, the show focuses on the true stories of six people sentenced to death and later freed after being proven innocent.

Waters will share the stage with Kathleen Chalfant, William Marshall and Chris Sarandon.

Founded by Allan Buchman in 1996, Culture Project’s dedicated to addressing human rights issues by shining an artistic spotlight on injustice.

The show plays at 45 Bleecker St. in New York’s East Village Nov. 27 through Dec. 2. (866) 811-4111.

Roger Waters discusses new album

Posted November 7, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd’s Roger Water has confirmed he has plans to record another album.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Waters reveals he’s written an as-yet untitled song about religious extremism that will likely be part of an upcoming album with the working title “Heartland.”

Waters, who wrote the new song during breaks of his recent tour of “The Wall,” also revealed that former bandmates David Gilmour and Nick Mason will not appear on the album. (A bit premature to call, we’d like to think, since recording for the project hasn’t started.)

Waters’ last rock record was 1992’s “Amused to Death.” Since then he completed work on “Ca Ira,” a French opera.
