Reviews: “The Wall” in Toronto

Posted September 16, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters opened his 2010/11 tour of Floyd’s seminal “The Wall” tour last night in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

For whatever credence you might put in critical reviews, you can see what The Associated Press (AP), The Star, the UK’s Telegraph and Calgary’s 660News thought of the show.

The AP might have been most laudatory: “Many times when classic rock artists perform, there’s an air of nostalgia, but not with Waters. Not only does the material seem fresh, it also appears 2010 is the right time for this tour, probably because of the technology that catapults it into the stratosphere.”

The Star was the most critical of these four reviews, calling the show a “cash-in,” and describing the music as “actually kind of drab and heartless, not much different from what you’d hear at one of those Classic Albums Live nights at the Phoenix were it not for the production values.”

Reunion date contest: The results

Posted September 15, 2010 by Floydian Slip

We asked you to take a guess as to the date David Gilmour would join Roger Waters on stage during Waters’ tour of “The Wall” that kicked off tonight in Toronto. We’ve been told it’s going to happen, but the date remains shrouded in secrecy.

The polls are closed, and we’ve crunched the numbers:

More than 80 people entered the contest, with guesses fairly evenly split between the North American leg of the tour (Sept. 15 through Dec. 21) and the European leg (March 21 through June 29). Though London’s series of five shows next May is clearly the voters’ favorite.

On the North American side, Waters’ Oct. 5 show at Madison Square Garden was the most popular, earning four votes. On the European side, guesses clustered around the London shows, with the May 11 show at The O2 coming out on top of all shows worldwide with eight votes.

“Floydian Slip” is going on the record by saying our guess is London’s May 17 date.

The person who guesses closest wins a copy of Water’s “The Wall Live in Berlin” on CD. If the winner guesses the exact date, we’ll add to the kitty a sealed copy of last November’s Classic Rock magazine with the 3D Floyd cover.

Now we play the waiting game …

Nick Mason: Floyd anthology in the works

Posted September 1, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has indicated a Pink Floyd anthology and catalog reissue might be in the works.

His comments appear in an interview published in the recent issue of Rhythm magazine.

“We’ve been developing the idea of a Pink Floyd anthology for a long time. I’ve spent quite a lot of time trying to find the material. I really enjoy that, but it’s time consuming,” he says.

“We’re talking about doing a big reissue of the Pink Floyd catalogue because there is the belief that there eventually will be the point that there simply won’t be enough market to generate those sort of packages. That would be a tragedy, so it’s a good time to do it.”

Floyd producer Joe Boyd, Robyn Hitchcock on tour

Posted August 27, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Early Pink Floyd producer Joe Boyd and musician Robyn Hitchcock are touring the western United States.

Calling it the “Chinese White Bicycles” tour, Boyd talks and reads from his book, “White Bicycles,” while Hitchcock provides musical interludes. (See “Early Pink Floyd producer writes book.”)

“We have taken this double-act to the Green Man and SXSW festivals and it seems to have gone down OK,” Boyd writes, “so we’re taking it on the road!”

Boyd produced Pink Floyd’s first single, “Arnold Layne,” and has worked with many other bands, including Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, REM and others.

Contest: Guess the Gilmour/Waters date

Posted August 26, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pigs flew July 10, when Roger Waters joined David Gilmour on stage at the Hoping Foundation charity event in Oxfordshire.

To even the scales, Gilmour has promised to join Waters at one show of his “Wall” tour to perform “Comfortably Numb” with his former bandmate.

But which show? That’s the question.

Guess the closest and win Roger Waters’ “The Wall Live in Berlin” from 1990. Guess the exact date, and we’ll throw in a sealed copy of Classic Rock‘s excellent 3D Pink Floyd issue from Fall 2009, celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Wall.”

Make your guess now. One guess per person. (Don’t worry, laddy, we’ll know …)

Roger Waters stays with Warner/Chappell

Posted August 26, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters and music publishing firm Warner/Chappell have renewed their contract.

The arrangement means the company will continue to administer songs Waters wrote or co-wrote while with Floyd — from the band’s “Atom Heart Mother” (1970) album until his departure from the band following “The Final Cut” (1983).

Warner/Chappell is a division of Warner Music Group Corp.

Richard Manners, Managing Director of Warner/Chappell UK said, “Roger is an iconic songwriter, lyricist and musician. Each generation discovers these phenomenal albums anew, and their wide-reaching influence and popularity continues to grow.

“We’re delighted Roger entrusts these songs to Warner/Chappell on a global basis, and we’re looking forward to the work ahead, especially with much-anticipated ‘The Wall’ dates on the horizon.”

Storm Thorgerson (right) and Aubrey “Po” Powell (left), founders of prolific album cover design house Hipgnosis, were on hand for an event at the San Francisco Art Exchange last week.

Hipgnosis, and, later, Thorgerson’s other design teams, designed nearly every Pink Floyd album cover starting with 1968’s “A Saucerful of Secrets,” as well as covers for its members’ solo projects.
