Design award renamed after Storm Thorgerson

Posted August 10, 2013 by Floydian Slip

Prog Magazine has renamed its Grand Design Award after late Pink Floyd designer Storm Thorgerson.

Now known as the Storm Thorgerson Grand Design Award, it’ll be given to the designer of this year’s best-packaged product. The nominees are 10cc, Hawkwind, the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Peter Blegvard & Andy Partridge, King Crimson, Family, Peter Gabriel, Arve Henriksen and Rush.

Thorgerson, known for his work with Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Black Sabbath and others, died in April.

“Storm’s contribution to prog rock and beyond is incredible,” says Prog Magazine editor Jerry Ewing. “We felt it was only right to pay tribute to the man who has given so much to music through his art.

“The re-titling of the Grand Design award is especially fitting, given that Storm won it at last year’s ceremony for his continued work with Pink Floyd.”

The awards ceremony takes place at Kew Gardens, London, on September 3. Register to vote and become eligible to win prizes from all nominated artists.

Two of David Gilmour‘s children have been cast in roles on the television program “Downton Abbey.”

The Pink Floyd guitarist’s son, Gabriel, 16, and daughter, Romany, 11, are working as extras on the period drama.

Gilmour was pictured at the set during a shoot in Oxfordshire, England, this week, looking as if he were channeling Ernest Hemingway.

These episodes being shot for the fourth season will air in the U.K. later this year. The fourth season will air in the U.S. in early ’14.

Dark Side-inspired radio play to premiere Aug. 26

Posted August 7, 2013 by Floydian Slip

“Darkside,” a radio drama by noted playwright Tom Stoppard (center) inspired by Pink Floyd’s 1973 “The Dark Side of the Moon,” will premiere on BBC Radio 2 on Monday, Aug. 26 at 10 p.m.

The production, commissioned by the BBC, was recently previewed for an invite-only audience of dignitaries, including Floyd drummer Nick Mason, at a BBC “happening.” Attendees donned headphones and were treated to a simultaneous light show.

“I love it,” Mason told The Independent. “But I’m tempted to text Tom and tell him it’s really great — but there was a lot of actors talking over the music.”

Stoppard’s first major success was “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” in 1966. He also wrote “Shakespeare in Love,” “Arcadia” and “The Real Thing.” His play “Rock ‘n Roll” drew inspiration from the life of Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett.

Read details about “Darkside” at The Independent website.
