Three-song Pink Floyd cover EP coming in April

Posted March 13, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Fruits de Mer Records will release “What Colour is Pink?” on April 19.

The EP will include three Floyd songs from “A Saucerful of Secrets” — “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” “Let There Be More Light”, and “A Saucerful of Secrets” — re-recorded by German prog/psych band Vibravoid.

Available as a limited edition of 500, the EP will be sold as a pink vinyl 7-inch record with pink label and pink sleeve. Already 200 of the EPs have been pre-ordered.

This will be the 10th release from the Surrey-based label, which boasts it “loses money on every release and we love it.” The company, in business for less than two years, has previously released re-recordings of songs originally by Small Faces, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Nick Drake, Caravan, Kraftwerk, Van der Graaf Generator, Nico and others.

Fruit de Mer’s eighth EP included a cover of Floyd’s “Julia Dream” by Swedish duo Us and Them.

You’ll be able to buy the EP at the label’s Web site. For more information, email them.

Posted March 13, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Just a heads up for listeners of “Floydian Slip” who might be tuning in from areas that don’t observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) — or don’t observe it at the same intervals as our affiliate stations might:

The U.S. will switch to DST tomorrow at 2 a.m., “springing ahead” an hour.

If you’re in part of the world that doesn’t observe DST — and you’re listening online to an affiliate station that does observe DST —” that means you’ll be hearing our show an hour earlier than before, beginning with Sunday’s broadcasts.

Court sides with Floyd over online sales

Posted March 11, 2010 by Floydian Slip

The BBC reports the English High Court has decided in favor of Pink Floyd in a dispute the band has been engaged in with its long-time record label EMI.

At issue is whether the label has the right to sell Floyd’s tracks individually online. The ruling could remove Floyd’s catalog from the iTunes Music Store and the like.

The band had maintained its contract prohibits EMI from selling its tracks piecemeal without band permission, and this contract, agreed upon before the advent of MP3, included online sales.

EMI disagreed, saying the word “record” in the contract meant a physical thing that didn’t apply to digital files sold online.

The court today sided with the band, which wasn’t present to hear the ruling, saying the contract guarantees to preserve the “artistic integrity” of the band’s albums, which prevented so-called “unbundled” sales of individual tracks without the Floyd’s say-so.

EMI has been ordered to pay $60,000, but, in a statement, said, “Today’s judgment does not require EMI to cease making Pink Floyd’s catalogue available as single track downloads, and EMI continues to sell Pink Floyd’s music digitally and in other formats.”

This latest court ruling is part of a much larger long-running dispute between the band and label over approximately $15 million in allegedly unpaid royalties.
