“Saucerful” reissue coming for Record Store Day

Pink Floyd Records will reissue the band’s 1968 album “A Saucerful of Secrets” in its original mono mix for Record Store Day April 13.

James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman worked from the original 1968 mono mix for this reissue. Pressed onto 180-gram vinyl, it’ll come with a faithful reproduction of the LP’s original artwork, including the Columbia logo. (Early Floyd albums were released in the U.K. sporting the Columbia logo, via EMI.)

The “Saucerful” reissue will be limited to 6,500 albums.

Last year, the band offered a reissue of “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1969) for Record Store Day.

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 as a way to celebrate and support independently-owned record stores.

Alan Parsons to release new album

Alan Parsons will release his first studio album in 14 years this spring.

“The Secret,” comprised of 11 new tracks, will arrive April 26 on the Frontiers Music label.

Parsons engineered Pink Floyd‘s “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973). His last album, 2004’s “A Valid Path,” featured David Gilmour.

The first single from “The Secret” will drop later this month, with pre-order details to follow.

Roger Waters to release “The Soldier’s Tale”

Sony Classical will release Igor Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” recorded by Roger Waters next month.

“The Soldier’s Tale” is a musical theatre piece conceived in 1918 by Stravinsky and Swiss writer C. F. Ramuz, and based on the Russian folk tale “The Runaway Soldier and the Devil” from the collection of Alexander Afanasyev.

In the original story, a soldier trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited wealth. Waters has rewritten the text of the original piece for his adaptation.

In his recording, Waters plays all of the roles — the principal parts of the Soldier, the Devil and the Narrator, as well as all supporting characters. As originally conceived, the piece uses three actors for the principal roles, along with one or more dancers.

Other recent adaptations of “The Soldier’s Tale” include an animated version featuring Max von Sydow and broadcast on PBS in 1984; a 1993 version by Kurt Vonnegut that set the story in WWII; and a jazz version by Joan Sanmartí in 2002.

Waters’s “The Soldier’s Tale” is set for release Oct. 26.

“A Foot in the Door” coming to vinyl

On Sept. 28, Pink Floyd Records will issue 2011’s “A Foot in the Door — The Best of Pink Floyd” for the first time on vinyl.

The 16-track compilation will become a 2-LP set pressed onto heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.

It’ll include a gate-fold outer sleeve and two printed inner bags. The original sleeve design by the late Storm Thorgerson has been revised by Hipgnosis cohorts Aubrey Powell and Peter Curzon to include alternate versions of the photos used on the original CD.

Originally released as part of the band’s 2011 “Why Pink Floyd?” reissue campaign, “A Foot in the Door” includes tracks from “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975), “The Wall” (1979), “The Final Cut” (1983), “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” (1987), “The Division Bell” (1994), and the early ’67 single “See Emily Play.”

All tracks have been re-mastered for vinyl by long-time Floyd associate James Guthrie working with Joel Plante; with lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman of Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles, Calif.

This vinyl pressing of the album will feature the full version of “Time,” restoring the ringing alarm clocks at the start of the track, which were omitted on the CD release.

Nick Mason to be special guest on “Floydian Slip”

Pink Floyd drummer and founding member Nick Mason will join host Craig Bailey on an upcoming “Floydian Slip.”

Mason will appear on an episode of the show that’ll air in late August.

Last Tuesday, we announced Warner Music will reissue Mason’s three solo albums as a box set called “Unattended Luggage” on Aug. 31. (See “Nick Mason box set coming Aug. 31.”)

He begins a 21-date tour of Scandinavia and Europe on Sept. 2 with his group Saucerful of Secrets, playing vintage Floyd.

Mason’s the only member of Floyd to have appeared on each of the band’s albums.

He previously appeared on “Floydian Slip” program #970 in November 2014. You can hear that interview and read a transcript online.

We’ll announce a specific air date in August.

Nick Mason box set coming Aug. 31

Warner Music will release a limited edition box set of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason‘s previously-released solo work on Aug. 31.

Titled “Unattended Luggage,” it’ll include three discs:

“Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports” (1981);
“Profiles” (1985); and
“White of the Eye” (1987)

The box set will be available in CD and LP formats. Each individual album in the box will also be made available as a digital download and through streaming platforms.

This will be the first time in more than 20 years the titles will be available in CD and LP format.

“White of the Eye,” a film soundtrack Mason recorded with Rick Fenn, who also collaborated on “Profiles,” has never been available on CD.

“These recordings hold a very special place for me in my musical life,” Mason says. “‘Fictitious Sports’ developed initially from working with Mike Mantler, Carla Bley, and Robert Wyatt on a couple of their projects, and benefited enormously from a whole crew of great musicians that I was introduced to by them at Grog Kill Studios in Woodstock.

“‘Profiles’ and ‘White of the Eye’ were an extension of working with Rick Fenn on some advertising and short documentary film soundtracks, which then developed into something more,” he adds.

“Listening back after 30 odd years, I’m delighted they are getting the reissue treatment. I’m rather hoping that sales will be sufficient to damage the market in the original rare vinyl versions!”

Mason is a founding member of Pink Floyd and the only member to appear on every Floyd album and at every Floyd show.

Mason on tour

The release of “Unattended Luggage” is timed to coincide with Mason’s tour with Saucerful of Secrets, a band he assembled to perform early Floyd music.

The 5-person group debuted at four small shows in London May 20-24, and will launch a tour of Scandinavia and Europe starting Sept. 2.

Michael Hann (Financial Times) wrote of the May 20 performance, “This was the most extraordinary and joyous show — a reminder of what a peculiar and brilliant band Pink Floyd were.”

Roger Waters: Animals coming to 5.1 Surround Sound

Roger Waters says a 5.1 Surround Sound edition of Pink Floyd‘s “Animals” (1977) is on its way.

According to Super Deluxe Edition, the Floyd co-founder mentioned the release during an interview on Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2:

“I’ve just been working with Po (Aubrey Powell),” he said. “There’s a reissue of ‘Animals,’ I think, a 5.1 remix of ‘Animals,’ and so he came up with some new photographs of Battersea Power Station, as it is now, to use as a CD cover for the new 5.1 mix. It’s beautiful.”

Any 5.1 remix wouldn’t be pressed to compact disc, since the format doesn’t support the technology. So Waters most likely was referring to an upcoming Blu-ray or DVD.

Relics re-release coming in May

Pink Floyd Records will re-release its 1971 compilation album “Relics” on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl on May 18.

The album was remastered was James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman, the same team responsible for the spate of other recent Floyd re-issues.

“Relics” includes singles; B-sides; and tracks from the band’s first three albums: “The Piper at the Gates Of Dawn” (1967), “A Saucerful of Secrets” (1968) and the soundtrack to the film “More” (1969).

At the time of its original release, it boasted a previously-unreleased number written by Roger Waters, “Biding My Time,” recorded in July 1969.

“Relics” was the first album to include the Floyd singles “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play”; and the original studio recording of “Careful with That Axe, Eugene,” originally the B-side of “Point Me at the Sky.”

The sleeve features the original black and white drawing by Floyd drummer Nick Mason, with the subtitle “A Bizarre Collection of Antiques & Curios.”

All tracks are the original stereo versions, except for “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play,” which are the original mono mixes.

The label has been busy re-releasing the Floyd catalog on vinyl. A re-issue of “Pulse” was announced earlier this week (“Pulse to be reissued on vinyl“).
