Roger Waters stays with Warner/Chappell

Posted August 26, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters and music publishing firm Warner/Chappell have renewed their contract.

The arrangement means the company will continue to administer songs Waters wrote or co-wrote while with Floyd — from the band’s “Atom Heart Mother” (1970) album until his departure from the band following “The Final Cut” (1983).

Warner/Chappell is a division of Warner Music Group Corp.

Richard Manners, Managing Director of Warner/Chappell UK said, “Roger is an iconic songwriter, lyricist and musician. Each generation discovers these phenomenal albums anew, and their wide-reaching influence and popularity continues to grow.

“We’re delighted Roger entrusts these songs to Warner/Chappell on a global basis, and we’re looking forward to the work ahead, especially with much-anticipated ‘The Wall’ dates on the horizon.”

Storm Thorgerson (right) and Aubrey “Po” Powell (left), founders of prolific album cover design house Hipgnosis, were on hand for an event at the San Francisco Art Exchange last week.

Hipgnosis, and, later, Thorgerson’s other design teams, designed nearly every Pink Floyd album cover starting with 1968’s “A Saucerful of Secrets,” as well as covers for its members’ solo projects.

Some Floyd titles no longer available as downloads

Posted August 18, 2010 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd‘s post-“Dark Side of the Moon” catalog has been removed from digital retail sites such as iTunes and Amazon.com following the lapse of record label EMI‘s contract with the band June 30.

EMI continues to sell CD copies that it already has in stock, but won’t be able to manufacture new copies of post-“Dark Side” albums until, and if, it signs a new contract with the band.

Floyd’s albums following 1973’s “Dark Side of the Moon” were originally issued by Columbia. EMI acquired the rights to them in 2000. Pre-“Dark Side” albums are unaffected and still available as hardcopies and digital downloads from EMI.

This latest development is unrelated to a London High Court ruling that sided with the band, which argued EMI didn’t have the right to sell its tracks online individually, a practice known as “unbundling.”

Reuters reports the band’s management has been shopping its back catalog around to labels for a new licensing deal for 18 months, but the high asking price has turned away a number of labels.

Floyd is one of the biggest selling recording acts of all time. Since 1991, the band’s albums have sold 36.2 million copies in the United States, including 654,000 in 2009 and nearly 311,000 in 2010.

As an example of how digital sales have contributed to Floyd’s volume, consider this: According to Reuters, in the two months leading up to the expiration of EMI’s contract, fans were buying about 1,000 digital copies of “The Wall” a week. That number is now practically zero.

Syd Barrett look-alikes sought

Escape Artists is looking for people who resemble Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett for an upcoming video production.

The video will be used as the opening visual projection for the organization’s Shine On arts festival in November, and in its Off Your Rocker Arts and Mental Health campaign. The group will cover travel expenses (within the U.K.) to the video shoot and the festival.

Contest entry instructions are at the Interstellar Web site. The deadline is Aug. 31.

Escape Artists is a London-based charity that uses art in education, mental health and social inclusion.

Orb album to feature David Gilmour

Posted August 18, 2010 by Floydian Slip

The Orb‘s “Metallic Spheres” album, to be released this fall, will feature guitar work by Pink Floyd‘s David Gilmour.

Gilmour’s contributions come from a jam session with Martin “Youth” Glover (Killing Joke), originally intended only for an ambient remix of “Chicago,” the Graham Nash song Gilmour helped re-record to benefit alleged UK computer hacker and cause celebre Gary McKinnon.

“Metallic Spheres” will be released in October, with all artist royalties going to benefit McKinnon’s plight to fight extradition to the United States.

There will be two versions of the CD release: A standard, single-disc version; and a two-disc deluxe set. The deluxe version will include the standard CD, along with a second disc presenting the material in 3D60™ sound.

3D60™ is a new sound production process developed by Glover, sound engineer Mike Brady (The Jam) and Ian Thompson that simulates three-dimensional sound without any special equipment needed.

The album will also be available on vinyl and as a download on iTunes.
