Nick Mason: Reissue/rarities campaign just the beginning

Posted June 25, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason made some recent appearances in Billboard magazine and New York’s Q104.

In Billboard, Mason talks about the upcoming reissue/rarities project “Why Pink Floyd?,” telling writer Gary Graff the band has warmed to the idea of releasing incomplete and alternate takes.

“One now looks at these things and realizes there really is interest and how things came about and what the early versions were and so on. We thought rather than just leave everything in the vaults, it might be worth bringing everything out and giving people a complete view of what we’ve done,” he says.

Most exciting, Mason says the the already announced schedule of releases (“EMI announces massive Floyd reissue/rarity project“) probably won’t be the end of the vault-mining.

“We will do some more sort of in-depth versions of other albums, but I don’t know what we’ve got in the pipeline for that, yet.”

Gilmour joins Waters tonight

Posted May 12, 2011 by Floydian Slip

The nearly-year-long mystery was revealed on David Gilmour’s blog moments ago: When would he make good on his promise from last summer to join Roger Waters on stage to perform “Comfortably Numb” with former bandmate Roger Waters?

The answer: At tonight’s o2 show in London.

Gilmour’s post says the song will be recorded for posting on “various websites,” but is not intended for an eventual DVD of “The Wall” in the works.

“Look on the bright side: that means you’ll get to see it sooner,” the post reads, before adding tonight’s appearance truly is a one-off.

“David is not repeating his special guest performance at a later occasion, I’m sorry to disappoint those of you with fingers crossed and tickets for later shows.”

Waters joined Gilmour on stage at a charity event last July (“David Gilmour, Roger Waters perform together“). The deal, as it was revealed later, was Gilmour agreed to, in turn, join Waters during one show of his “Wall” tour, to perform “Comfortably Numb.”

“Floydian Slip” turned the upcoming pairing into a contest (“Reunion date contest: The results“), asking people to guess the date of the reunion for a chance to win Waters’ “The Wall Live in Berlin” from 1990. Guess the exact date, and we’d throw in a sealed copy of Classic Rock‘s excellent 3D Pink Floyd issue from Fall 2009, celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Wall.”

We’ll be mulling over entries this evening to determine our winner.

Greek ‘Wall’ shows to be filmed; Milan dates moved

Posted April 20, 2011 by Floydian Slip

“The Wall” will be committed to film when the show is performed by Roger Waters in Greece in early July.

To accommodate the filming, the tour’s Milan, Italy, dates have been rescheduled. The July 6 and 7 shows for Milan have been moved to July 3 and 4, respectively.

Ticket holders are instructed to hold on to their tickets, which will automatically become valid for the new dates. Those who cannot attend the new dates, should return to their point of purchase for a refund no later than June 15.

Waters previously announced the shows in London would be filmed, asking for close attention of the show’s no photography policy, since flash photos interfere with the show’s projections and affect filming.

We’ve been told to expect a possible theatrical release of the show, as well as a DVD.

Nick Mason-signed cymbal helps charity

Posted April 6, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has donated a piece of his drum kit — and his signature — to help raise money for a U.K. charity.

When you make a donation to sponsor drummer Mike Dolbear‘s run in the Halstead & Essex Half Marathon May 8, you’ll get a chance at winning a Paiste 2000 Reflections 14-inch thin crash cymbal used by Mason on Floyd’s 1987 album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” and signed by Mason.

Dolbear, co-founder of drummers’ Web site mikedolbear.com, will run just more than 26 miles to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust, devoted to improving the lives of children and young adults with cancer.

“Every £2.50 of sponsorship will earn one chance to win, so £25 will earn 10 chances,” Dolbear explains. “There no maximum donation.

“When you have made a donation, please send an email to charityrun@mikedolbear.com with your name, contact details and the amount that you have donated. When I have completed the run, Nick Mason will pull a name out of the hat and the lucky winner will receive the cymbal.”

The winner will also receive a certificate of authenticity and a copy of “Momentary Lapse.”

As of this writing, Dolbear has raised £390.

Make your donation online. And follow Dolbear on Twitter.
