Hot Wheels releases Nick Mason Ferrari

Posted April 11, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Hot Wheels Elite has released a 1:18 scale replica of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason‘s 512 S Ferrari.

The car raced in 1970 with Mario Andretti, Ronnie Peterson and Arturo Merzario as drivers; and appeared in the 1971 Le Mans film starring Steve McQueen.

“Performance cars, and Ferrari in particular, tend to be at the leading edge of excellence and innovation, and the 512 S is no exception,” Mason says.

The model is part of Hot Wheels’ Ferrari in Music collection, which also includes cars owned by George Michael, Eric Clapton and Jamiroquai.

It’s a limited edition of 5,000, and retails for approximately $100.

Learn more about the model at the Hot Wheels Elite Web site.

Nick Mason-signed cymbal helps charity

Posted April 6, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has donated a piece of his drum kit — and his signature — to help raise money for a U.K. charity.

When you make a donation to sponsor drummer Mike Dolbear‘s run in the Halstead & Essex Half Marathon May 8, you’ll get a chance at winning a Paiste 2000 Reflections 14-inch thin crash cymbal used by Mason on Floyd’s 1987 album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” and signed by Mason.

Dolbear, co-founder of drummers’ Web site mikedolbear.com, will run just more than 26 miles to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust, devoted to improving the lives of children and young adults with cancer.

“Every £2.50 of sponsorship will earn one chance to win, so £25 will earn 10 chances,” Dolbear explains. “There no maximum donation.

“When you have made a donation, please send an email to charityrun@mikedolbear.com with your name, contact details and the amount that you have donated. When I have completed the run, Nick Mason will pull a name out of the hat and the lucky winner will receive the cymbal.”

The winner will also receive a certificate of authenticity and a copy of “Momentary Lapse.”

As of this writing, Dolbear has raised £390.

Make your donation online. And follow Dolbear on Twitter.

New Ron Geesin album out

Posted March 11, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Avant garde recording artist Ron Geesin has released his latest album, “RonCycle 1: The Journey of a Melody.”

Geesin has worked on the suite, composed of 16 movements, since 1986. “The reason that it has all taken so long is that, as it grew, it frightened me so much that I had to walk away for long periods,” Geesin explains.

He credits Mark Ayres, known for his work on the BBC’s “Dr. Who,” with helping complete the project by transferring parts of the project from analog tape to hard drive. “The whole digi-structure was becoming overwhelmingly complicated,” Geesin explains.

Geesin is best known to Pink Floyd fans for his work on Floyd’s “Atom Heart Mother” (1970) and his collaboration with Floyd’s Roger Waters on “Music from ‘The Body'” (1970).

He was a guest on Floydian Slip in November 2010. You can hear that interview and read a transcript online.

“RonCycle 1: The Journey of a Melody” is available on CD and 180-gram LP, which includes a bonus CD. Buy it online at tonefloat.

Nick Mason’s pink motorcycle on the auction block

Posted March 9, 2011 by Floydian Slip

A pink motorcycle formerly owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will be auctioned at the International Classic Motorcycle Show in Stafford, England.

The Honda VF500 will go on the block April 24 to benefit Think Pink Scotland, an organization that raises funds and awareness of breast cancer in Scotland.

“We were thrilled to receive the Honda and I am hopeful that Pink Floyd enthusiasts will dig deep for a great cause,” says Think Pink Scotland founder Lynn Murray. “It is a really eye catching bike and I am sure there will be plenty of people keen to start the bidding.”

Revenues from the auction will go toward Think Pink Scotland’s campaign to build a laboratory within the Beatson Translational Research Centre in Glasgow. Building work is due to start in March and £8.2 of the £10M required has already been secured.

The auction will be conducted by Bonhams.

For more information about Think Pink Scotland, visit the organization’s Web site.
